1. Rider Questionnaire

The Level 2 Retul bike fit process begins with a brief rider questionnaire with the purpose of the fitter getting to know the clent's riding history, training levels, injury history and goals. This information is key to the fit process as each rider is different and an ideal fit must always suit the rider.

2. Cleat Fore/Aft Adjustment

The fit begins with a pre-check of cleat fore/aft and rotation positioning. Unless a rider has a strong preference or need for anything other than a "neutral" cleat position it's a good place to start before any measurements are taken with the Retul. The fitter will then observe the rider for a number of minutes as they warm up to gain an overall impression of the rider, their current fit and riding style.

3. Flexibility Assessment and Lower Limb Anatomy Check

The fitter will then perform a number of simple flexibility, core strength and limb alignment checks with the rider. Hamstring and hip flexibility along with good core strength are key to a rider being able to maintain a solid stable riding position (especially in time trial and triathlon disciplines). Lower limb alignment and balance are checked. Often earlier observations in the riders movement patterns on the bike will be reflected in their hip, knee and foot stability and alignment off the bike.

4. Position the Dots

The Retul system uses a collection of infra red LED's attached on 8 key points of the rider's anatomy. The accurate positioning of each LED is key to the accuracy of the measurement process. Dots are positioned on each side of the rider so measurements can be taken from both left and right. During training for Retul certification, the fitter spends a number of days learning and being tested on how to accurately position each dot. Bike Science head fitter Andy Sexton is one of only two Retul certified fitters currently working in the UK having trained at Retul with their head fitter Todd Carver.

5. Attach the LED's

The final step before measurements are taken is to attach the Retul LED's to the rider. LED's are position on the forefoot, heal, ankle, knee joint, shoulder, elbow and wrist at very specific bony landmarks. While measurements are being taken, the position of each LED is recorded 29 times per second.

6. Measure and Record

Retul is not a fitting system, it is an extremely accurate measurement tool capable of giving the fitter accurate data not available from any other fitting tool. Each set of measurements is taken while the rider is in motion under a controlled and consistent power output. The power output selected based on rider fitness and ability in order to simulate real world riding conditions as closely as possible. Measurements are taken from each side of the rider to check for imbalances. Both rider and fitter can view the results of each set of measurements.

7. Make adjustments and re-measure

Adjustments to the bike are made based on observations from the first sets of measurements. The aim of each adjustment is explained to the rider. Further measurements are then taken to check if the adjustments had the desired effect on rider position. This process then continues until both rider and fitter are agreed that the final fit position is comfortable, powerful and efficient. In most cases between twenty and thirty measurement sets and corresponding adjustments to the bike are taken during a single fitting. Due to the speed at which Retul captures information that's over thirteen thousand individual measurements!

8. Measure and Record Final Riding Position

Using a Retul developed tool known as "The Zin" a detailed measurement and report of the final bike geometry is taken. Each client is provided with their individual fit report so if needed they can replicate the riding position on any number of bikes of the same type.
