Forged version of our best selling Ultralight CNC brake callipers.
The same clever cam design as the CNC version ensures fantastic stopping power and finger tip modulation. They're just 20g heavier for the pair than the CNC Alu versions so still tip the scales at just 225g including bolts and pads - massively under the weight of even the best high end brakesets (Dura Ace 7900 brakes weigh 284g).
Hi Mike - onour bike builds? Because we ran out of stock of Rival calipers. Bike build costs (to us) have been rising gradually and we've been able to absorb most of them of the period of time. The change to Planet X brakes isn't (in our opinion) a retrograde step as they're superb brakes (I use them on my bikes!!) but it gave us the opportunity to make up (just a small bit) of lost ground by leaving the price of the bike the same. ;-)
Why did you stop using the Rival brakes and start using planet x brakes, yet kept the bike price the same?
Hi roryh - mine's a 4mm hex. Checked after our telephone conversation ;-)
Hello, Recently bought an SL Pro Carbon with SRAM Red (great bike!!) However, I'm having problems adjusting the rear brake. What is the countersunk bolt behind the rear break? Is it a 4.5mm hex??? Doesnt seem very standard!
Hi Mart - no. There is no Q/R mechanism on the brake (one of the concessions you have to make for having a brake set as light as that I'm afraid). To remove the wheel, you could try pinching the two brake pads against the rim and then unhook the cable clamping bolt.
Hi SzelongN - no but to summarize... Tighten up using the usual main clamping grub screw. Centre up using either the 13mm central barrel (use a cone spanner) or the allen key hole in the front pivot bolt. There is no Q/R mechanism on the brake (one of the concessions you have to make for having a brake set as light as that I'm afraid). To remove the wheel, you could try pinching the two brake pads against the rim and then unhook the cable clamping bolt. That's about it :-)
Hi, do these come with installation instructions?
Shimano / Sram ;-)
Would I need the shimano/sram OR campag. brake blocks to be compatible with these px brakes? Cheers!
Hi Nick - you COULD do but it's highly advisable (and recommended) to swap them for some carbon specific ones. Yellow Swiss Stop, Ashima or Jagwire for example.
I've bought a pair of these...is it possible to use them straight on my Planet X Pro Carbon 50's or do I need to purchase a different set of pads? Cheers!
Hi Geo - if they weren't any good I wouldn't be using them. Honest!
Thanks Ian, should have guessed you would say that ;)
Hi Geo - we think they're better of course ;-) We thought the type of customer who prefers Force over Rival would appreciate a further upgrade to these. They're lovely brakes ... and so light too. I've got them on my bikes ;-)
I notice the SL Pro SRAM Rival builds have Rival brakes, but the Force build has these instead. Are they better than the SRAM Force brakes, or is there another reason for these ones being fitted?
Hi Scott - there aren't any! What's the problem? Centring them up maybe? Tighten up using the usual main clamping grub screw. Centre up using either the 13mm central barrel (use a cone spanner) or the allen key hole in the front pivot bolt.
Hi, do you have the tech docs for these brakes, im having probs setting them up correctly, thanks
Hi Lee - if you want the full Ti 'blingy' jobbies you'll need to head here... http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/BCPXULCNC/planet-x-ultra-light-cnc-brake-calipers These don't just use any old Chromo though ... it's the best quality Chromo you can get. I had a set of these for a year thinking the Boss had given me the top notch ones to test before I realised I'd been duped! I could hardly tell the difference ... but I'm old, gullible, impoverished and have poor eyesight! Seriously...top quality calipers.
Is the hardware on these Ti, Aluminium or just Chromo?
Hi JamesL - yes...Shimano compatible. Swiss Stop, Ashima, Jagwire etc. will do fine.
Guessing they're shimano compatible pads? given you're out of pads, what would you recommend for your carbon rims?
Hi guys do these have a quick release type mechanism as per shimano or more campag stylie!
Forged brakes hardware is all chrome plated
Hi Peter - they're only just back in stock and orders are being dealt with. Grateful if you could bear with us if there's a day or two's delay as we've got a bit of a backlog to clear after the stock take.
i ordered the black ones a couple of days ago. do you now when theyll be in stock again?
Hi Paul - the CNC ones are slightly better finished off (probably due to the machining) and use Ti bolts. Having said that, I used a pair of the Forged ones for a year before I realised they weren't the CNC ones I thought I'd been given to try out by the Boss. It was only when I got a pair of the CNC ones that I could see the marginal differences. Either are excellent mind you...believe me.
Hi What is the difference between these and the CNC ones? Are the bolts and hardware just the same, is it just the forging vs machining?
I think for me the correct way to centre the caliper after fitting if you know what I mean like any tips to quickly reposition it etc. Thanks
Rudi, we're going to make a video tomorrow, any particular aspect that you are keen to see? Our mechanics swear a lot so it should be funny too.
Tom, if you call our customer service team and ask for Charley, he'll sort you out some pads. Don't forget to sign up to our newsletter and facebook/planetxbikes for the latest offers and news.
Maintenance really thanks Simon and correct way to centre etc
Rudi, for fitting or maintenance?
Hiya Any instructions for these anywhere ?
What pads do these brakes come with/or fit? Mine are running low and I was impressed with the stopping force of them and want to get the same again
Hi EwanB - There is no Q/R mechanism on the brake (one of the concessions you have to make for having a brake set as light as that I'm afraid). To remove the wheel, you could try pinching the two brake pads against the rim and then unhook the cable clamping bolt. I've got mine carefully adjusted so the wheel drops out without having to do that though. I'm sure you could do likewise. ;-)
Hi just been out for the 1st ride on my SL Pro Carbon with Sram Red. feels very nice. It has a pair of these fitted. I think I must be a daft but can't find the quick release on them. They seem powerful enough. Kind regards Ewan
Hi Paul - they should do...yes :-)
Hi there, A quick Q. Will these fit my Specialized Roubaix Elite. Looking to replace the 'make do' calipers which came with the bike. Not sure how sizing works. Regards
Hi Andrew - well they're one size yes BUT they've got a fair range of brake-pad height adjustment: 35-50 mm (measured from brake fixing-bolt to brake-shoe-nut). Nice brakes :-)
Are these short reach only callipers ?
Hi, how wide do these brakes open? I'm looking for something that will fit HED stinger 6 (28mm brake track) without having to file the pads down. Thanks
Did I miss these, or are you still waiting for stock? Thanks.
The will again be available to buy the next time the website updates (which will be at 3pm today).
Hi, Are you getting any more of these? Thanks.
Any idea when these will be back in stock? Would really like a set of black ones.
Hi Mario, unfortunately we've been let down by our supplier and we're currently unable to offer these brakes except on bike builds for the time being. In the meantime I can recommend the Shimano Ultegra SL calipers- currently at a very good price.
Many thanks, I´ll be on it.
Hi, I would like to pre order a pair, black color, When it will be avaiable??? can you e-mail that information for me?? Thanks
