Steel-is-real, say enthusiasts. So in homage to traditionalists, we give you the Kaffenback - our steel do-it-all bike, mixing time-honoured design with modern refinements.
The Kaffenback is our steel do-it-all steed, redesigned to incorporate modern technology such as disc brakes. But whats with the name? Well, inspiration struck after a ride to the caff and back - sometimes simplicity is the key. So whats it for? Being a sturdy steel framed bike, the Kaffenback is versatile and suitable for a wide range of riding. Steel is best known for its silky smooth ride quality and durability thats what steel bike frame are all about. Theyre not intended to be as light as carbon frames (although, actually, some are); nor are they intended to cut through the race peloton like a razor (although, again, some do). No, what steel bikes are loved for far-and-wide is their honesty, their road-smoothing ride qualities and true lifetime durability.
Built from Maxwall custom double-butted chromoly tubing, with an all-new externally butted top tube, the Kaffenback is tough bike, capable of fully-loaded touring, training and commuting. Revised frame geometry increases strength yet you still get all the wonderful compliance and positive flex that only steel bikes deliver.
The Kaffenbacks traditional Tea & Coffee paint scheme is stylishly vintage inspired, whilst the sleek black model features reflective decals to help keep you visible and safe during darker night rides. With mudguard and pannier mounts, the Kaffenback is designed as a lifelong companion its the perfect excuse to get out there on the roads, see the sights, go touring, get the miles in, then fulfil commuting duties during the working week. Dependable and classy, thats the Kaffenback.
With a frame of this quality, you're getting a truly excellent bike and amazing value for money.

All frame size recommendations are approximate. A good fit will also depend on the correct choice of stem length, correct bike set-up for the rider and riding style.
Correct frame size choice can vary greatly with riders' torso length. If you have longer legs and a shorter torso, go for a slightly shorter stem. If you think you are borderline between sizes, and you have longer legs and a shorter torso, go for the smaller frame size. If you have shorter legs and a longer torso, go for the larger frame size to get the extra top tube length.
As the frame sizes increase, so does the length of the head tube. If you are inflexible or perhaps have a history of back problems, consider going for a larger frame size. This will increase the relative height of the handlebars making the position less “extreme”. The larger frame will also have a longer top tube, so you’ll need to compensate for this with a shorter stem.

Frame arrived on time and undamaged, but I had a problem getting some parts afterwards - they arrived over a week late after several inquiries as to their whereabouts. I did end up getting my postage refunded eventually.
The frame is nice to ride. I have it built as a 2 x 10 flat-bar commuter, with Avid discs and front SP hub dynamo. It feels smooth in general and is a good size for me, being 6'4" and very long of leg. I used to have an XL Inbred 26" and had to get an extra-long seatpost to make it fit, this frame is fine with a standard 350mm post with about 15mm to spare. There is only one real problem with the frame: probably because of its size, there is a lot of flex in the rear triangle when I have my rear panniers on. I appreciate that I'm a heavy rider at over 100kgs, but even with a light load, (say both panniers half-full) there is a very noticeable sway when setting off, or cornering hard. I'm now used to it, but it's not ideal.
Best frame ever - considering the price. My fourth Kaffenback and I built this one as a tourer. It's really incredible how well it handled a fully loaded tour. Unfortunately the fork doesn't come with eyelets for a front rack, so I used clamps to install a Tubus Tara. Used a Tobeak disc rack at the rear because standard racks won't fit because of the disc brakes. Dragon blue paintjob is nice but - as every paintjob on any of my Planet X bikes - quite fragile. And I'd like a wider tire clearence, like in the previous version of the Kaffenback.
High quality product with good price
Perfect trecking bike frame
Nice and really strong frame, finishes and painting are really nice. Compact and not so heavy.
Very fast delivery and shipping, very good packaging.
Frame arrived in good time, but bottom bracket threads were poorly cut. Had to take the frame to my local bike tech to have the threads re-done.
Heel goed verpakt. Vlotte service.
Schneller Versand, gnstige Preise
Really good frame except for the thread on the right hand side in which you screw the bottom bracket. That one was poorly cut.
super fast delivery to Germany.
On the positive side i am happy with the customer service i received in the sheffield shop. However, the customer service generally was very poor. I was told over the phone there was a bike for me to try in the sheffield store, but having travelled down an hour each way to visit there was no bike available. Arrangements were then made to have two made up for me to try the following week, but this was then cancelled and I was told would not happen at all. I therefore had to make a purchase without trying the bikes for size. This was all very frustrating and had I not already had a bike sold to me by planet x a year or so ago I would have walked away (this sale had also been misleading as the bike purchased was advertised as a medium when in fact it was a small!).nnWas given a discount by sheffield shop on my purchase because of the messing about, together with some good advice, and once ordered the delivery of the frame and fork was quick and without a hitch. Overall I was not impressed by the organisation in terms of different parts not communicating well with each other which gave me a bad overall experience.
