If you’re under 30 or new to mountain biking then you might not have heard of John Tomac. One of the true legends of the early days of mountain biking he was one of the first U.S Pro riders to hit the dirt and the third inductee into the U.S Mountain Biking Hall of Fame.
Starting in BMX little leagues at the age of seven Tomac progressed through the age groups until at age 17 he won the National BMX Cruiser Class. Already a skilled bike handler and a serious competitor it wasn’t long before he found himself racing on and off-road.
On the road, he earned the title of ‘Best young Rider’ in the 1998 Coors Classic Prologue. A stint with Continental road team 7/11 Motorola saw him race across the U.S and Europe but when push came to shove he loved racing off-road more than on the road and returned to the mountain bike circuit.
During the late 80’s and 90’s he was almost unbeatable, picking up NORBA and national titles as well as multiple World Mountain Bike Championship. And he didn’t just win in one event; he swept the board in cross-country, trials, downhill and uphill disciplines.
Never afraid to challenge convention Tomac was often the herald for changes in mountain biking, he was one of the first riders to move over to suspension forks and he’s forever associated with Tioga’s Disc Drive rear wheel. He was the poster boy for XC and downhill racing and a hot commercial property always in demand and willing to help out to promote the sport. He rode to victory for Mongoose, Yeti, Tioga Raleigh, Giant and his own Tomac brand before finally retiring from racing in 2005.
John’s huge depth of bike experience and a keen eye for technical detail have resulted in some amazing Tomac creations over the years and now he’s teamed up with Planet X to help us create a range of bikes that are worthy of the Tomac name.
The first new Tomac bike to hit the trails is the Tomac Hesperus, a full carbon Fat Bike with 1X SRAM drivetrain and an incredible lightweight wheelset hand built with HED Big Deal Carbon rims and Tune King/Kong fat bike hubs. Like the man himself it’s an incredibly gifted all-rounder and it’s all set to make a huge impact in the mountain bike market.
Chasing the Hesperus out of the blocks is the Mesa Verde a clean cut, cyclocross racing bike cut from the same mould as Johnny T himself. It's light, agile and more powerful than you'd imagine, and it's guaranteed to push you all the way to the line.
For the more adventurous riders amongst you Tomac's carbon Gravel /Adventure bike, the Montezuma is waiting in the wings. With a high-tech frame, built using our EPS inside moulding technology to create a lightweight frame and inner beauty and remarkable strength to weight, we've gone all out on the Montezuma. The component specification is every bit as exciting as the frame and we've fitted nothing but the best from SRAM's CX1 groupset, with hydraulic brakes and hand built wheels made with Selcof's much loved off-road hubs. The Montezuma is ready for a big adventure, get ready to spread your wings and take flight.
