Boggle Hole update - The "Loop" is Added and the Chimne

Boggle Hole update - The With the Wayne Randle "world champions" Boggle Hole smackdown approaching there was a chance meeting today at planet X headquarters of the two ultimate hardmen of the 2009 team . Double IM UK winner and former world cross training champion Hywel Davies (check him on youtube bending iron bars on his head) was on site to spec up his 2009 road machine of choice , a ti road decked out with a mix of exotica - and also present on a chance reconnaiscance trip for the latest swag he could blag was the bag rat himself Randle . With new teammate and mile eater Bradley Johnson alongside the Randle / Johnson train collectively decided that the return route needed a small "loop" on through the beautiful countryside of "Heartbeat" county would make the Sunday a real jolly day out . However the smiles soon turned to frowns and there was reported bucking of the knees in both Florida and Germany when Randle announced the dreaded "aye an we can come back up t' Rosedale chimney thats a reet nice climb that" For those not in the know Rosedale is probably most feared leg breaking climb in the UK and is steeped in cycling folklore , for the planet x teams wannabees and has-beens , its going to be a place of reckoning to see whos been putting in the hard work this winter . to quote from the ryedale rumble - "Rosedale Chimney Bank Verdict - Quite Simply this is the steepest road in all the UK, Its such a remarkable ascent and one which truly has its place in Cycling Lore, this climb destroyed half the Milk Race when they went over it years ago, don't think the continental pros had seen anything quite so steep! There's 5 'special' climbs in the UK that I reckon most cyclists should at least experience at least once...Hardknott Pass / Wrynose Pass / Rosedale Chimney Bank / Bwlch Y Groes / Bealach Na Ba...all very infamous for their individual characters, but one things for sure, the Chimney's the steepest. For any devout UK cyclist it really is one of the Island's compulsory Sacrificial Pilgrimages which must be at least attempted just once in a lifetime!"

  • milo

has anyone told those southern softies at Cycling Weekly yet ?

  • andy

No, but they probably should be

  • Toyota_Crown

    Are SoftRides banned? :)

  • a.k.a

special limited edition bag rat t-shirts

  • Hywel

So are we travelling all this way just to do the Chimney Bank just once, and leaving it to Sunday.? Do we get a refund? Whats code for Saturday night? Wayne's World T shirts, Hawaiian or poofta pink shirts?

  • boggle mole

spare chains are packed, spare wheels are packed, spare tyres are pack, spare inner tubes are packed...all that is left if for me to pack on saturday after about 50miles

  • rob

Sod chains is it carrying spare sets of legs ! I think i will need something a bit special to get up there on the sunday What was i thinking ............

  • Hywel

Is the broom wagon carrying spare chains?

  • andy

Spencer's bike doesn't actually have a small chainring. Or at least I've never seen him use it.

  • Spencer Smith S2

    Game ON!!!

  • Hywel

Practised some big ringing today, doing a few 20% climbs on Saturday and i'll let you know on Sunday if i'm in for the £100 challenge.

  • benni

pain association/disassociation....i will be disassociating...and thinking of sex and thats the only reason for my legs buckling and any seepage in my shorts on this hill

  • to55er

Thee and me can do day two on day one..and day one on day two if you like adman. (That means we GO via the Chimney....ie DOWN it, and come back via the "easier" 90 mile route).

  • adman

    Can I get a refund?

  • dave

Tats nothing , apparently randle likes a bit of pink big ring action .

  • Hywel

Not sure i'm happy with being known for liking a bit of big ring action.

  • dave

Theres talk of a 100 pounds planet x bonus for the (first) rider to get up the chimney on t big ring - (compacts dont count) and max sprocket 25T , and that is riding only not walking . Odds are being laid if strongmen Davies , Randle , or Smith will be up for the "big ring challenge"

  • to55er

"Don’t see your name on the results though Ian? Another non-start??" - my name wasn't on the start sheet either Andy. I mean...do I look stupid? Urm...don't answer that! (We went out to watch.....people actually fell off you know! ).

  • adman

5m 22sec to ride 1200yards... ouch! Might have to bring my MTB.

  • andy

Don't see your name on the results though Ian? Another non-start?? ;)

  • to55er

    http://www.paulcurran.ndo.co.uk/articles/1987/871025-NationalHillClimb.html .....I was there! It's steep.

  • boggle mole

massive team going to boggle hole, Bradley Johnson is binning his first race of the year for this trip!!! watch and learn...

  • andy

I think it's a case of which breaks first, your chain or your legs

  • magnier

ha ha ha ha ha ha! rich needs his head cam on for this!

  • Poet

I've witnessed folk tipping back going up Bay Bank and Rigg Hill in Egton Bridge, let alone up Chimney!

  • andy

    and a 12/27 cassette

  • adman

1 in 3! Ouch. Is this because I said there are no hills on mud island that require a compact crankset? Maybe a 50/34 crankset is not such a bad idea... ;-)

  • andy

    That's my plan too

  • adman

oh dear... maybe I should stay down south that weekend??? :-)
