A not so top secret launch in Roth

Challenge Roth is one of the most prestigious Triathlons in the Europe, if not the world, starting from humble beginnings; the event has taken on the might of the IronMan Corporation and won the hearts and minds of competitors and spectators alike.

For those of you who are new to Planet X, we should also say our founder's heart and soul lays deep in the Triathlon scene and, in his never ending pursuit to push our wares further, this year we are attending the Challenge Roth Event. (I did say it would ramble on!)

Every news story has to start somewhere – for us, it was at our Sheffield showroom. The journey here was epic – 1262 KM or 15 hours solid in an old Mercedez Sprinter that has now started to feel like home, the drivers seat has been literally moulded to my arse. Leaving Rotherham at 12:00 noon Wednesday, I was surprised to still be driving 15 hours later but after a hard slog, we made it here okay.

Will, who is working the event for us has managed to earn a new nickname - “never been out of Yorkshire man”, his astonishment at a South London accent as we stopped to fill up with diesel will be something I will never forget and throughout the journey he has continued to make me laugh with his exclamations over everyday occurrences and miscomprehensions of the real world such as the nearest airport to Roth in Germany being Luxemburg! Go figure!

The event is being used as a launch pad for several new products; The EXO3, the Maratona ,Planet X Disc Wheel, Planet X Quin Spoke Wheel, Aero Road Bars and the Kronus TT Helmet.

Planet X are unveiling two very special bikes for the first time at the huge Challenge Roth Triathlon Expo in Germany this week. It will be the first big opportunity for the public to spy, and indeed touch, the new Planet X EXO3 in the flesh – the new triathlon and time trial frameset that has been eagerly anticipated by so many looking for that extra aero advantage.

Creating fast bikes has always been at the heart of what Planet X does and with our new triathlon and time trial weapon – the EXO3 - we’ve taken everything we know about Advanced Aero Design and pushed it right to the limits. Planet X Head of Design Jamie Burrow has been working long and hard to perfect the monocoque EXO3. Using the technology and wind tunnel testing that has worked so well in our race-winning EC-130 E Aero road bike, we have produced our fastest and most efficient machine yet.

Visitors to the stand in Roth will also be able to witness a special and ‘secret’ launch of the new Planet X Maratona road bike that has its origins in the Italian Dolomites… all we can say is that the Jamie Burrow designed bike was influenced by his victories in some of the world’s biggest Gran Fondos.

The large Expo area at Challenge Roth, held close to Nuremberg in southern Germany, runs from midday Thursday 14th July through to midday Monday 18th July, with the world famous Ultra Triathlon with over 5,000 competitors taking place on Sunday 17th July. Planet X will be occupying a prime spot in the Park Area of the expo alongside the competitor registration area and right after the race finish line (stand 69 on the site plan).

Roth is the world’s biggest long distance triathlon event and attracts over a quarter of a million spectators.

Luke Dragsta, who has been a sponsored rider and a friend of Planet X for many years will be racing the event, debuting the Red and Black EXO 3. Luke rode an 8:13 for us on his bright pink Planet X Stealth a few years back so it’s fitting he is launching our new EXO3 this year.

After hearing a thought invoking story about a selfless Canadian ultra athlete who was returning to racing after donating a kidney who’s bike had failed to arrive for the race and who had enriched the life of someone deeply we have agreed to let her ride the latest Planet X bike so she can compete. We love a good head to head so… in true Planet X style this weekend’s main event will be Lucy Ryan Vs Luke Dragsta!!!

We will be here for the rest of the week, enjoying the company of sports fanatics during the day and staying at the home of the very generous Susanne Buckenlei eating her great food and drinking some quality German beer!

Come and see the new Planet X EXO3 at Challenge Roth as well as our secret new road bike.
