Our two ‘cross crash test dummies Alan Dorrington and Dave Haygarth have been riding the Pickenflick in the most lab-like of lab conditions: Actually out there and racing. From the first prototype to the first production model, Dave was hooked…

“There’s immediately a ‘wow’ factor. It’s a very stable feel – almost like a road bike, when you first get on it, but you’re in no doubt you’re on a ‘cross bike as soon as you start throwing it about in some filthy mud.” Alan’s experience in ‘cross, like Dave’s, is enough to make you wonder why he isn’t balder and greyer. From the late 80s, give or take a few lost years, Alan’s been riding ‘cross throughout the country and at all levels on bikes of all descriptions. The Pickenflick is a culmination of those bikes, for him.

“The Pickenflick looks absolutely gorgeous. Its sleek, tapered headtube doubles as home-art if your spouse allows you to keep it in the front room. The brushed Titanium tubing is understated but beautiful and the tidy welds give off an air of assured quality. Safe to say that the frame has attracted many admiring glances and comments when myself and Dave have been out and about on the prototypes, including slightly breathless conversations about availability mid race in both the last two 3 Peaks Cyclocross events.”

Dave and Alan are both interested, as ever, in the fine detail. “It’s one of those bikes that has the ability to look simple and without any frills”, says Dave. “That’s a real art – to make something plain and subtle. Every bit of the functionality and demand of a good ‘cross bike is there though. I know so because I helped On One design and refine it. The first prototype was 90% there. The geometry was right with totally race-led angles and a positive feeling of control but we ironed out a few niggles. Cable [or hose] routing for the rear brake to keep it further from the tyre, and some work on the top tube, adding a stability tube for the stay triangle, all subtle stuff.”

Alan points out that “The chunky 1 ½" tapered headtube gives rock solid handling on the roughest of terrain and allied to a big beefy carbon fork the Pickenflick offers super clearance, so even at a Peel Park Bradford mudbath, the Pickenflick keeps running. In fact it clogs less than the other disc frames I've ridden, and they don't clog at all compared to many current canti offerings. Subtle changes in cross section across the downtube and toptube allude to performance enhancing design of the tubeset - stiffer and broader in areas of most stress. A lovely curved piece across the seat stays aids this, allied to rearward disc mounts and befitting a proper do-it-all 'cross bike, it has useful double bottle mounts. The toptube is left rounded rather than flattened and is still super comfy to carry, as many 3 Peaks-style Bull Hill sessions have proven as well as 3 outings in the ‘Peaks itself”.

“Titanium is a wonder-material”, says Dave. “You’d be hard pushed to find a trail as tough as that. Rocks that make your teeth chatter and force you to ride on such high tyre pressure [to prevent punctures] that you’d give anything for suspension. This is where the titanium really kicks in. You just don’t get the same level of vibration, it’s a god send”.

But when you’re in the park, riding the ‘chipper races and are one of the majority who doesn’t boast a jetwash and spare bike in the pits, this bike pays you back. “Did I say clearance? It is now absolutely massive, when it was merely brilliant before.” says Alan, on the production version’s improvements over the prototype. “If I had to have one bike (and not just one 'cross bike either), this is the bike I would have. It simply covers all the bases, and has a real 'wow' factor about it to boot.”
