Planet X Uncle John Sport: A great value cyclocross bike

If you need a super-tough durable cyclocross or training/commuting bike to see you through the depths of winter, the Planet X Uncle John Sport is the bike for you.

The triple butted lightweight aluminium frame can withstand the worst weather conditions. The Uncle John has been designed to accommodate full mud-guards to keep everything nice and dry and take 35mm tyres. It will see you proud for years with the minimum of fuss.

"My UJ is solid and strong without being heavy and sluggish. I use the UJ mainly for my 25 mile round trip commute along gravel and mud towpaths. It will also be used for winter training when the nasty weather gets here." Neil Almond (Readers Rides)

Planet X Uncle John Elite: My first cross bike

Fancy a punt at riding cyclo-cross this winter? We've all read about the benefits of racing cross; its great for maintaining fitness and it's a good laugh...

The Planet X Uncle John Elite is the excellent choice for those entering the muddy, slippy, crazy world of cyclo-cross and the Elite is a perfect balance of performance and value.

A lightweight triple butted aluminium frame with loads of mud-clearance and kitted out with Frogs bollox cantilever brakes to keep the dirt at bay, SRAM Force components ensure precision shifting, the FSA Cross-specific (46/36) Chainset provides ultra-efficient power transfer. Maximum enjoyment at an sensible price

"My cross bike has been all over the place; raced around fields, up and down mountains on the 3 Peaks. I've used it as a training bike during the summer when it's too grim for the TT bike and used it for week long trips to the alps, and even a spot of mountain biking" Greg May (Readers Rides)

Hi, Just wanted to know if the frame has 135mm or 130mm rear hub spacing. Thx Piet

  • MadsR

i've been riding 42mm tyres with no problems.

  • Dylan

Hi, I am confused about the max tyre clearance on the Uncle John. Website states 35mm and 38mm in different places. Will the frame fit 38mm knobbly tyres? Cheers.

  • ianc (Planet X team)

Hi Frode - we're constantly reviewing bike build specs according to customer demand and stock at any given time. We most probably sold out of some of the Elite's components. It MAY make a reappearance in one form or another at some time in the future though. All Uncle John bike builds use the same frame so the Geometry of the Sport will be the same as that for the Elite.

  • Frode Pleym

Hi guys, What happened to the Elite? Does the Sport have the same geometry? ie is a XL a XL? Thanks!

  • ianc (Planet X team)

Hi Bill - yes of course! :-) Uncle John's a legend round here. We'll be seeing more of him very shortly - end of July / beginning of August I reckon. Keep your wallet in your pocket and your eyes on the site.

  • Bill Brady

Will there be any more Uncle Johns? Im looking for an all round bike to replace my old Ernie Clements 531 tourer. If so will it be Cycle to work friendly price? Cheers Bill

  • SimonN

Hi, When do you think you will have frames back instock? Looking for a new cross build and wanted to get started early! Will there be any updates or colour changes?

  • JonB (Planet X Team)

Hi Sam, yes, well spotted. A technical error on our part- we're fixing it right now and it should be sorted by 3pm today. You will be able to upgrade either bike for the difference in sell price of the two items. Many thanks.

Hi, I was looking through the customise options and wondered why there was the option to upgrade to a force rear mech on the sport build whereas on the elite build you can't select a force rear mech. I was also curious as to why selecting Rival shifters on the elite model over Force ones was an extra £10 seeing as they are cheaper. Finally i was wondering why the sport build is given the option to upgrade the shifters to Red but not Force?
