Be Smart, Use A Rear Light

With over a month before British Summer Time even begins it is still very easy to get caught out on ride without lights. With this in mind we take an impartial look at one of the best rear lights about - Smart's Lunar R1...

Smart claim the R1 is 'The brightest rear light on the planet' and while it is difficult to truly test that claim, we certainly can't fault the R1 in terms of brightness. Much of that is down to the high power 1 Watt 'eXtreme' emitter LED, in conjunction with two supporting diode LEDs. A brighter light means better visability, and the consensus in the office that the R1 is one of the brightest lights we've ever sold. Almost antisocially bright in fact! If there's a chap on your club run who won't get off your wheel and take his turn at the front then switching this little beauty on will soon change his mind!

The primary LED on the R1 is PCB mounted for better heat transfer, thus improving LED longevity and battery life to save you having to replace batteries constantly. In fact Smart claim a pretty impressive up to 100hrs run time from the 2 supplied AAA alkaline batteries despite the lights power. The main LED is encircled by a high-polished hyperbolic lens reflector in order increase the width of the main beam for better sideways visibility, useful when emerging from junctions or negotiating roundabouts.

The R1 has 3 modes which should see you right in most situations. On an initial press of the nicely tactile rubberised power button the light switches to flashing mode where main LED flashes repeatedly while the two secondary LEDs stay on constantly. A second press of the power button and the light enters steady mode with all the LEDs lit constantly. After a third press the light goes to power save mode switching the main LED off leaving the secondary LEDs on constantly.

We know what it's like to get home from a freezing commute on a miserable Tuesday night and the last thing you want to do is faff about in the garage with a screwdriver to remove your lights. We really appreciated the on-off nature of the R1's quick release which allows the light to be clipped into the mount using the clip on the back of the light, which also comes in handy for clipping onto the back of a jersey or a rucksack. The 31mm diameter mount comes with rubber shims for fitting to any size seatpost. The set also includes a handy 18mm diameter mount for mounting the light to a seat or chainstay.

Smart Lights Lunar R1 and mount

Overall, the Smart Lunar R1 is an incredibly bright, well put together rear light with a sturdy yet easy to install mount and some nice extra features. It's bright enough to be used a sole rear light, yet the versatile chain/seatstay mount and the handy belt-clip means it could be used as a good backup or emergency light. To put it simply we'd be more than happy to use it on a day to day basis.
