San Marco Supercorsa - A Legend Returns

In these days of space-age composite technology, bike frames and components, there remains a certain type of cycling gentleman who is still committed to technologies from days gone by. They covet components and finishing kit that were crafted by hand, assembled by skilled artisans and ridden by legendary riders. Hidden away behind the back offices of family-owned bike shops are treasure troves of undiscovered New Old Stock (NOS) items from the 70's and 80's that are much in demand to complete period correct, rebuilds of hand built, classic, lugged steel race frames.

On a recent R&D team trip to suppliers and manufacturers in Italy, Planet X founder, Dave Loughran, opened a door onto a piece of cycling history - literally! After being shown around the sample and cutting room at Selle San Marco, Dave took a wrong turn and ended up trying to leave via the wrong door; that door, however, was a direct passage to the 1980's. Dave had stumbled into the leather sample and swatch cupboard, where Selle San Marco stores the sample swatches and excess trims from some of their most timeless saddle designs.

Dave found swatches of brightly coloured, hand-finished, fine suede, perforated and naturally patterned leathers - timeless samples of some of the finest Italian hides ever to grace a saddle. The entire room smelt of vintage leather - and opportunity! So Dave made a deal with the boss of San Marco for them to reintroduce a very limited run of the classic Concor Supercorsa saddle using all of the original leather samples. The Concor Supercorsa was San Marco's first truly lightweight saddle. With significant design input from Giovanni Battaglin when he was at the height of his Giro winning powers, it was one of the very first sub 300 gram, polymer-bodied saddles and it graced the bikes of many celebrated cyclists. From Saronni winning the worlds, to Lance's endeavours, it was the choice of champions throughout the 80s and 90s.

This legendary saddle is being reintroduced for a limited run, and once they are gone, they're gone for good. You could buy the current re-issue of the Concor Supercorsa if you didn't mind modern synthetic materials, but if you want the 'genuine article', finished in the original leather used during the 80's, then this is the only game in town. If you're thinking about a period-correct retro restoration, or looking to put the finishing touch to a thoroughly post-modern retro styled ride, then we will certainly have a saddle for you. There's not a steel bike out there that wouldn't be improved by being finished off with the Concor Supercorsa's stingray-like curves and subtle flowing lines. It truly is the return of a legend.
