Spencer :: Flip Flopping Part 1 *Definition of flip-flopping: A reversal, of a stand or position. I believe the political term here in the states is flip flopping and I am 100% guilty of it. At the start of the year, I was determined to race only 70.3 distance events or under. That all changed after my non-start at 70.3 Uk. Let me retrace my steps a little. Everything was going according to plan a week out from the race. Then unfortunately the unexpected happened. I managed to acquire a stinking cold. Ironically it was the day after I rode and ran the course. I was super motivated to get a result there but most of all to put in a big performance on home soil. After a few days with no improvement in my health, I made the mid week decision to scrap the idea of racing. I found myself now up a creek without a paddle. After a small persuasive chat with Dave (The gaffer) I decided to make a new plan of attack for the next part of the year and that was to focus all my energy on another Ironman title but for the first time in my career on home soil…Ironman UK it is then!!! My training since I have returned to the States went something like this… Week 1 & 2: Heavy volume: 25 hours plus, no real intensity, just doing the miles. Getting my body used to day in day out, consistent training of 4, 5, and 6 hours … Week 3: Recover and race. It was to be a send off before I went to Tucson for a mini-camp. Unfortunately, it got cancelled due to heavy rain/slash thunder and lightning…So really just another summer’s day in England then, but what can you do. Weeks 4, 5, & 6: On the following Monday I traveled to Arizona for 3 hard weeks of volume and intensity. Currently, I am nearing the end of the 6th week and starting to crack a little due to the conditions here…Close to 100 degrees most days with fairly high humidity due to Monsoon season. At the moment, most mornings I feel like I’ve been hit by a Mack truck but I do come around after several cups of Joe and about 45 minutes of feeling sorry for myself. Coming soon in Part 2… Tucson training camp details and it does not involve any lounging around the pool with my plates of meat on a sun bed. Promise!!! Spencer
