Spencer :: Merry Graft!

Spencer :: Merry Graft! Normally this time of year is all about excess. Unfortunately for me, I took the excess ticket a bit early this year due to my injury and now it’s time to pay the piper, so no mince pies for me this holiday season…Well maybe just the one. The one great advantage of coming back from an injury is that your body has healed and you feel both physically and mentally fresh and ready to crack on. The second thing is that you really appreciate the feeling of being fit. Since Ironman UK, I have had a fairly rough time of it. Firstly, my result in England was substandard…a very long, average day at the office. A few weeks later while I was preparing for the 70.3 World Championships, I unfortunately got Achilles tendonitis. It became so painful, even riding became unbearable. I had to face the facts that I wouldn’t be prepared to get on that start line injured, so the Worlds was a no go for me. Still after 18 years of racing, I can count on one hand the number of times I have missed a race through injury. I really can’t complain. Fast forward to where I stand today, 18 weeks off equates to 18 pounds on the old body structure. I sat down the other day and looked at the 2009 race schedule and all of a sudden my focus, moral and motivation was back. I feel ready to hurt again. Now if only getting to the start line in tip top race condition could be as easy. But like I always say, “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it!” In my next update, I will be giving you the lowdown on how the old waistline is doing and whether riding Mount Lemmon here in Tucson, AZ at 18 pounds over my normal weight really is as hard as I think it might be. Until then, have a couple of Mark’s & Spencer’s mince pies on me, you all have got some catching up to do… Merry Christmas to you all and Happy New Year… Spencer

    Good luck for 2009 Spencer. Your still one of all time greats in Triathlon. The fastest, the most stylish and the most charismatic. Coolest bikes, coolest gear and the biggest heart. Happy new year from Ireland
