Magnut toast of the New PX Track team

Andy Magnier, a member of the new Planet X track team, got the 2009 season of to a flyer on Saturday night by winning the Open Welsh Madison championship in Newport in front of a packed crowd. The Win is a great result for the new UK track team in its first outing since forming in January. The event attracted a massive field of 24 teams, made up of the best talent in the UK including the Olympic Development Squad, requiring 2 heats to be run.

In the first Heat Planet X team Ian Cooper and Richard Prince made sure of qualification by scoring points in the final two sprints at the same time as Andy, partnered by Adam Duggerby (not a PX rider), also secured thier place in the final by winning the final sprint. In the second heat Adam and Boyd Roberts were unlucky not to qualify after a collison involving wheels and spokes resulted in them losing a lap and not making the cut.

The team are riding the Carbon Pro Track bike with Carbon 50 wheels and against the might of British Cycling they made it count. As the final began it was pointed out that Ian Cooper was, on his own, older than any other "combined partnership" racing on the track and partnered with Richard Prince more than doubled the age of any other team.

The 30km final, 120 laps, rolled away and was full on from the start. Andy made his mark early taking points at will and despite Andy and Adam's complete lack of technical ability their strenght and speed took them all the way to the line for a victory. It was an impressive win against the best young talent in the country and the GB team might soon be taking a closer look at Andy Maginer, as he might be the one who got away.

Planet X pairing of Cooper and Prince didn't manage to complete the race, pulling out with 30 laps to go at 1 lap down, but not before 5 teams before them, so they picked up a respectable 9th place. Not bad for a pair of old farts, who, in their time have picked up a Bronze medal in the 2007 National Madison.

Speaking after the race Andy said, "Not bad, I could do with a curry and a pint". Keep it up Andy!! Next outing for the team is a trip to Boggle Hole with Wayne Randle where they intend to give him a beating in his own back garden. Watch out Wayne here we come...
