Welcome to Thomas :: "Hell on Wheels" meets the "Moor P

Former Ironman World Champion and new Planet X team signing Thomas Hellreigel had his first taste of life on Planet X with the inaugural Wayne Randle "it wer ard" Boggle hole weekend . He told two stories last night at dinner to my wife and kids, the first about Saturday - he seems to think the PX northern roadies are a strange breed of moor people ? "first we were a group of 40, then we were a group of 20, then we were a group of 10, then we were a group of 6 I could not slow down because i didn't know where I was and was scared to get lost and no-one would find me! Then we lose 1 more and I say shall we wait and they say fek him, he will find it rosedale1 Then i climb over a big hill and leave the other 4 left behind as I begin to roll down the decent they attack past me in the big chain wheel again...the next minute we are racing down the hill and I see the SEA!! I ask if we go wrong they say no we are here... On the second day up the chimney I have never seen a hill like this before, my bars are pulling my front wheel of the floor, my back wheel is spinning and I am shouting in German never to come to England again. I ride back in the slow group today because it is supposed to be my rest week before I fly to Italy and in the slow group people are losing wheels and the speed is sometimes only 15kmp. I am thinking some people will never make it back. Then I get to the finish and everyone is laughing to think it was a fun ride...I dont see anything like this before in my career..I have been out with the moor people!!" EDIT: Zoomed in photo of the 4 riders cranking it up the hill in the background. Who's who? (click for a bigger pic) zoomin

in Feb kept me of the bike. Tho I managed to drag myself to Boggle Hole and back. This is not looking good

I work at Planet X and we love all cyclists they are our living and our colleagues, yes there are quite a few ignorant gits on road bikes, I say that being and ex mountain biker where we all let on to each other. But please put this into context, if you were hanging on to Wayne Randles wheel, your vision and focus would be very limited and just the slightest loss of attention and POP your off the back spending the next 3 hours on your own. Not to mention loss of focus can mean a crash If you have made extreme efforts yourself you will appreciate this lack of vision and your surroundings, I mean all I can remember from the ride is pain and looking at someones back wheel, I was told that we went through some lovely countryside, but I will have to do the ride slower next time so I notice. If we didnt let on it was purely unintentional, not that we are too good to acknowledge you. Regards ray

to be classed as an average cyclist amongst the Barnley massif as enough for me. Glad i'm not on the shite list?

  • andy

    "Special" - I like that ;)

  • Alf

On the gravevine I heard Randel is special Spencer was soft Thomas was belwildered Hywel was average

  • Stevie

Benni you're a top bloke no need to ride naked round barnsley :) One at least that doesn't come out with shallow excuses . You can come and ride the lumps of the North Yorks Moors with me anytime. You're right about roadies. I'll doth mi flat cap to anyone if i ad one, it's just fellowship among cyclists, thats all no more no less. If you say they didn't mean owt by it then thats OK by me. End off. Some good climbs you lot did there, I'll come along for sure next time ya about :)

  • Hywel

Its Boggle Hole...it does that to people.

  • paul

This websites getting a bit weird, even for me..... : - )

  • BENNI

STEVE,jokin and winding up aside ,i come from a mountain bike back ground and acknowledge every trailuser ,i have brought that to the road wether it be alad on a bmx or some one on a £100 mtb going to work,i agree there is alot of snobbery, and they look at your bike before your face, because im one gobby shite ,im very vocal when i meet it.i dont believe for one minute any body in the groups think that they are above any other rider on the road......i for one will ride my pink bike naked round barnsley.....no kiddin if thats what it takes,,,,kinky man

  • dave

Ive known a lot of the riders a long time and I dont think your comments are a touch over the top based on a one time passing , I dont think for a minute anyone in those groups would deliberately blank / ignore a fellow cyclist - riding in a big group with the hammer down on pretty gruelling roads , with novices and pros requires a degree of concentration and focus, not to mention suffering so its not quite as simple as noticing whats coming towards and donning a cap / smile. Best bet is come along on the next ride , there were quite a few regular clubmen in the group that wed not seen before , not only sponsored riders , and a real mix of abilities , all comers welcome , bring your son and join the crack , you could show everyone the rules of the road and maybe learn a few things along the way

So when are planet x issuing flat caps so we can doth to all passing cyclists? I flash my lights at every fellow motorist i pass going the other way. We share a love of cars. Sometimes they flash back, sometimes they stick 2 fingers up at me. There were a lot of international riders in that group, and some train on the continent where every other road user is a cyclist they may not know the unwritten law of yorkshire moors. We are ashamed of ourselfs (ourselves in english). What should we do about it? Cycle naked around Barnsley as an apology?

  • Stevie

Glad I got a response, from just an average Joe like me. I was out on a training run when the first group was just about to go down Reasty Bank & the second lot were about 1m back from that. I wasn’t on a turbo and I didn’t have sissy leg warmers on either ? I was going the other way, obviously not passing such an awesome lot. My point is whether you’ve just done 220m or 5m, a quick smile, wave or nod isn’t so difficult to a fellow cyclist and to totally blank someone is a disgrace. You should be totally ashamed of your self’s. My 12 year old lad has some PlanetX parts on his road bike, and he shows some promise for the future, had he been with out me what would he have thought???

  • andy

If you'd been chasing Wayne around the Moors for 220 miles you might not be in the mood for smiling and nodding much either.

  • BENNI

i cant remember anyone going past us,where you on one of them turbotrainers you can plug in to tinterweb and race other fair weather riders.and i can asure you my heads far too big for my tight asre, anyone else with an asre

  • dave

stevie - are you saying you caught and dropped the front planet x group , and that randles head is up his arse . I wouldnt advise suggesting that , but its a free world , and if your that awesome then we certainly need to put you in touch with dave brailsford and shane sutton.

  • Dick Scratcher

    ooh....

  • Stevie

I pasted you lot on Silpho top, not one smile or nod you miserable tossers. Probably don't see mi, as ya head was so far up ya own asre! ! ! ! No more Planet X stuff for me

  • Dick Scratcher

Anyone got any videos of this they can stick on You Pube ?

  • BENNI

THIS IS WHAT I LOVE ,THE BANTER THE RIDING....ITS BRILLL....ALL HAIL THE RANDLE

  • Keith Richards

I had a few similar shoe-ings from Wayne in 1983/4. I learned my lesson and moved from Doncaster to Liverpool! I never came back for more! Take my advice, anyone who thinks its ok to train with WR; don't. Spend your money on a one way ticket to a safe zone at least 100 miles away. To a place where everyone sits on, or soft taps, or goes to the pub instead.

  • benni

yeh and were only playin at it ,whats your exscuse, copper top

  • paz

soft tappers!!!!!!!!!!!,im 90kg,with a 3825,some of them lads were 20kg lighter than me with compacts and they still got off and pushed

  • paul bennington

thats not soft tappin thats smart riding...

  • ginger avenger

I should point out that Benni and Paz hadn't spent the morning chasin SID up and down dale for 2 hours before getting to chimney - soft tappers

  • Hywel

Were not that 'ard mate....i'd rather do 10 reps up that in the big ring than try and hand onto Randle for 5 mins.

  • BENNI

DID ANY ONE MENTION MR DAVIES GOIN UP IT INT BIG RING.......

  • BENNI

havnt you got any marking to do

  • Hywel

    Benni, Paz, Spence, Prince

  • BENNI

he is only doin that cos he saw the two lads in front of him doin it....prior to that he had started to walk,i thought he wer doin it again.im the one ont pink bike smilin ,loookin good .fuk me im andsome.....old hellforleather wor right [soft tappers ont back group] were bad .....

  • magnier

  • andy

I've added a close up of that pic. To me looks like Spencer 3rd from the left?? Who's who then?

  • boggle mole

  • magnier

  • adman

so does that mean he's coming back next year?

  • Hywel

Bollocks....Tom was tapping out the pace on Day 1. He should have come with the hard group on Day 2 and met the real Barnsley Bandits
