Hellriegel...but only just!

Hellriegel...but only just! In Germany it was Hellriegel from Smith in the battle of the Planet X galacticos but only just... Planet X’s man in Germany Thomas Hellriegel landed the top spot in his 3 race challenge vs Spencer Smith, as they raced to 8th and 9th respectively in Challenge Kraichgau in Germany. In blistering temperatures the two former world champions lined up along side Iron man McCormick and a host of triathlon giants. Coming out of the swim and it was Paul Ambrose and McCormick that were setting the pace. Ambrose, riding a Planet X Stealth Pro Carbon, was looking good, as was McCormick until at 30km he got a flat and had to retire (I only know this because he came and told me – excuses mate I told him. Spencer and Hellriegel were not far behind and charging fast. The course was a testing 90km going up some hard drags and even small ring climbs. Luke Dragstra was also in the hunt as he closed on the two legends to get within 2 about two minutes at the transition. Coming into transition Spencer had pulled ahead of Hellriegel but only just. They were neck and neck, 6th and 7th into transition with Spencer leading by 9 seconds. Luke was back 11th. Onto the run and it was Hellriegel who looked to be going well. Completing 3 laps of a circuit as they came round the first time he was just ahead. The gap had opened to just under a minute at the end of lap 2 and across the finish line Spencer came in just over a minute down – but still had time to wave and blow kisses to the crowd. As the commentator said…here comes Schpencer Smitd. A great race from the two Planet X men as they captured the imagination of the crowd dressed the Planet X red and pink tri kits. So 4 out of the first 11 bikes were Planet X Stealth Pro Carbon. Not a bad days work from the boys and they are set to serve up a real treat in the UK later this year. Some bloke from Finland won I think…
