Tour of the North - Stage 1: Prologue

Planet X's Martyn Irvine lay in third spot after the prologue of the P&O Irish Sea Tour of the North.

The rain lashed down on Stormont Estate as the riders warmed up for the opening time trial.

2009 winner Martyn Irvine was placed third of 98 riders with Cycling Ulster's Phillip Lavery taking the win.

Frank Campbell, the team's manager wasn't impressed with the weather conditions and was keen for the riders to "get properly warmed up, race, spin down and back in the warm" to keep them fit for Saturday's 76 mile stage.

The riders are pictured warming up on turbos and rollers to get their heart rates up almost to race pace. They set off at one minute intervals up the mile from the Prince of Wales gate up the hill to the parliament building.

Frank Campbell shaved as much weight as possible off the bikes down to fitting them with extra stiff carbon bars and ultralight CNC brakes to shave 70g off Dura Ace and get the rotating weight as low as possible by using ti skewers.
