Best of British

Planet X athlete and skinny boy Richard ‘El Fino’ Teare has taken top British honours at the European Duathlon Championships in France.

Duathlon is made up of 10k and 5k runs sandwiched around a 40k bike.  Perfect for those that like the idea of multi-sport without getting wet.

That said, weather made the water-phobic athletes sweat as persistent rain soaked the course at the UNESCO world heritage site at the centre of Nancy. The event had been preceded by a warning that the tight 5k circuit was too technical for TT bikes.  A wet track would have been disastrous.

After prayers, chants and various silly dances, the clouds parted.  Miraculously (and to the relief of the plaster-wielding first aiders) the event started in mild, drying conditions.

The French blockade that had occupied the first three rows of grid shot forward as the starting gun blew.  The early pace was fast and the field soon filtered into a splintering line.  Despite a testing pace, Teare held the front runners in sight knowing that the race was to be made on the bike.
(Run 1 – 30:59)
Not swayed by the health and safety Euro mumbo jumbo Teare had ignored the warnings that might keep him apart from his sexy white Planet X Stealth.  This paid dividends as the pair (Teare and Stephanie – the stealth) set a blistering pace, eating up those in front.
(Bike – 56:57)

From the chaos that had developed as gaps grew and riders began to be lapped, Teare emerged from the field in fourth, having made up four places on the bike.  In the final run, despite obvious pain and being passed the charging Garric of France, Teare held off a surging chasing pack to take 5th place and secure the mantle of being first Brit home.
(Run 2 – 17:15)

Overall result – 5th in 1:46:34 – a good day in the office.
