The British Cycling National Masters Track Championships take place this weekend, Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th July, at Newport Velodrome and Planet X will be out in force. Taking place at the indoor cycling velodrome located just off the M4 in Newport Wales, it is a great place to watch track racing and with a record field of competitors across age groups from 30 years upwards it will be an action packed weekend.

A Planet X team of hangers on will compete across 3 days in sprint and endurance races in a bid to be crowned “old gits” champion 2010. Already a team of champions and chav’s we have provided the low down on the team and take a look at their chances of glory.

If you get the chance to pop in over the weekend look out for these guys and say hello...they will be the ones with all the gear and on idea.

planet x rider ian cooperIan “the train” Cooper aka King of the Lima’s
Don’t be fooled by the name. He only gets that title because he is a train driver not because he goes like a train. Now at the twilight age of 40 he makes his appearance in the Masters C Category Scratch and Points race.

Keeping his annual preparation on track he managed to throw himself onto the deck a few weeks ago; battered and bruised he comes to the championships slightly off form, stiff and covered in scrapes. He usually peaks 2 weeks late and spends the next 12 months making excuses. I suppose at 40 coming late is better than coming early or not even coming at all.

A current National Track Champion, as part of the 2009 British Cycling National Team Pursuit winners, he has many medals from the Masters championships over the past 5 years. This year it is shit or bust as Coops goes for broke – death or glory.

planet x rider adam robertsShort Stop Roberts
The English “South African” comes in at way over 6ft but can’t do more than a kilo without blowing up. The defending Masters B Kilo Champion, medallist at the Euro’s and a top 5 at the Masters worlds gives pedigree that should see him on the podium come the end of the weekend.

A shaky start to this year with a broken hip or something like that after falling of his BMX means this year’s National Masters could come a little early for top form. A master at turbo training his way into contention the Euro’s might be a stronger event for him but you never know. The competition gets a little stiffer this year as some strong Kilo riders move from A to B shortstop is under no illusion the task he faces.

Tackling the weekend on every front with sprint and endurance races might see a name change from shortstop to Jack “of all trades” if he doesn’t bring home the bacon.

planet x rider simon crouchMort
So called cus “he so annoying” aka Simon Crouch – rocks up to his second National Masters Track Championship in better shape than ever after training this year! Attacking the scratch and points race he wants to improve on his 6th place in 2009 with a top spot podium before the weekend is out..

A believer is “Old Skool” training and preparation he was seen last Saturday riding Jet Ski’s and drinking yards of ale following a training camp in the morning at a secret location in the Midlands. A week of fried breakfasts and KFC’s will see Mort arrive on Saturday at his Ricky Hatton fighting weight.

The tightest man in history is sure to be on the scrounge for equipment come race time and if the bar is free the drinks are on him.

planet x rider claytonLast Lap Clayton
The oldest man in the team riding in the Masters D category – which didn’t hold him up last year as he was a part of the National Team Pursuit winning team – is a cert for a podium place in his events if he brings his A race to the D race.

Still on the team because he helped us get a “bike to work” deal at Bentley and we are still hoping for a couple of Team Cars, he has a strong endurance base and is always a threat on the last lap of a race at any level. He has been on form recently at local track leagues and events and goes into the Masters with his eye on the prize as he aims to add more gold to his growing collection.

Unlikely to see the front of the race before the bell can the man from Bentley take his passion for performance at work and delivery a performance on the boards at Newport.

planet x rider rich princeGinger Avenger aka Man of the RaS
Back on the boards late this year after his epic in Ireland the Avenger moves into the B category and looks to repeat his success from previous years in the scratch and points races.

Still struggling to cope with the recovery required from the 8 day race in Ireland he has struggled to regain any form or motivation since his return. The switch from a couple of rides and races a week against choppers to stage racing with Pro’s has left him empty. One eye on the World Masters in October he has a training camp booked for Cyprus in July where is hopes to use his strength from the RaS to set some rite averages.

Prepared or not the Ginger Avenger is a competitor and it unlikely to give it up and let anyone win without a fight. Not really a team player he has checked himself into the Celtic Manor for the weekend to keep away from his riff raff team mates and avoid the paparazzi that follow him everywhere. A t**t you can follow on Twitter he will also be blogging on the Saturday and Sunday night after the races to keep us all “ON TRACK” with the results.

It were 'ard but Shortstop manager start and finish every event including the gruelling 120 lap Points Race just behind the Ginger Avender. That was about 116 laps to far!!! Gonna need to sleep for a week to recover.

Good luck!!! Would be interested to hear how the bikes passed the UCI tests.
