PX Cook nabs 4th at British National Cyclo Cross Champs

Planet X Team Cross rider Dan Cook sent us the following report from the biggest cross race in the UK. Legendary photographer Andy Jones captured all the action.

British National Cyclo Cross Championships and round 6 of the Cyclo Cross National Trophy

Derby, National Trophy in Rutland Water (Well next to it)

Luck comes in threes?

Nervous was not the word.  A great win at the last Yorkshire Cyclo Cross round the previous week did nothing to reduce the pressure I had set myself for the National Cyclo Cross Champs at Moorways Stadium in Derby.

So a poor midweek race performance, a cold through the week and a rolled tub when warming up.  Hard though I tried, 10th place wasn't where I had envisaged finishing.  Bad luck seemed to be coming in three's then.

The last round of the National Trophy - the big national cyclo cross series in the UK - seemed to start in a similar fashion.  I'd hit a pothole in the dark during the week and broken the rim.  Taking the wheels out of the van and discovering I'd lost a quick release skewer, then riding in to a rope on a poorly laid out section of the course resulted in pulling a spoke out of my rear wheel.  Three bits of bad luck - were things going the same way?

Anyway, I thought I had nothing to lose, resulting in me being relaxed, laughing and joking on the startline.  On the gun, a big start sprint and I relaxed into the leading four or five riders.  Racing for just forty minutes is never easy, but it seemed to flow.  The fast, dry course suited me and I could give it some big licks to drop two of the group.

It wasn't all plain sailing and Chris Young swept past chasing his desired repeat win as per last year.

Second to last lap and I had been chasing down Phil Roach, but staying at about ten seconds behind for nearly three laps.  I gave it everything I could to join him, and made the gap just as the bell went.  Attacking out of the corners, I just couldnt create enough of a gap.

Phils speciality is technical mud and he cut inside at a corner on the only muddy section of the course.  Coming into the last offcambers, corners and banks, I was two bike lengths down with a short section of slippery cornering tarmac to the finish line.

A big sprint, but that was how it finished.  4th place - the best of the season - a cracking race and I loved every minute of it.
