Planet X Top Guns Join Forces in Brenig Road Race

Top juniors Ryan Mullen and Chris Latham were in fine form yesterday at Rhos-on Sea's annual 63 mile mountainous road race with over 3000 feet of climbing. Out of a field of 60 senior riders the first 3 places were taken by juniors.

The race started in the historic Welsh town of Denbigh passing straight up the "sportsmans pass" onto the Denbigh moors. After 10 miles, at the top of the Mian Bylchai climb, Mullen broke free of the main bunch with Luke Grivell Mellor from Mid Shropshire Wheelers and Giles Drake from the Paul Bethhell Electricals team and got a lead of some 45 seconds by the time they reached the beautiful Brenig lake.

By the time they descended into Ruthin the break had got one and a half minutes with Latham doing a fine blocking roll further back in the bunch. By the time the break consisting of Mullen and Mellor reached the final finishing circuit (3 laps of a 9 mile loop), they had extended their lead to around 3 minutes.

The 3 worked together well until half way round the 1st lap of the finishing circuit, the Paul Bethell rider punctured, leaving just Mulen and Mellor to work together to stay away. The pair worked extremely well together, obtaining a maximum lead of 4 minutes with just 1 lap of the finishing circuit remaining. On the final lap, Mellor put in a strong dig with just 2 kilometres to go.

Mullen wasn't able to get on to his wheel and was left chasing until the finish. In the end, Mellor won the race with Mullen coming across the line roughly 30 seconds after him to take 2nd.

Soon after this, the chasing break came in to view, containing Latham who formed the break coming out of Ruthin bringing along 6 or 7 riders with him. Coming out of the bottom corner before the uphill drag to the finish, some 350 meters away from the line. Latham kicked hard, leaving behind the break to take a well deserved 3rd place.

The remainder of the bunch soon followed in dribs and drabs some 2 minutes behind Latham's group and 3 minutes behind the winner. With 2nd and 3rd places going to Mullen and Latham, more valuable points have been added towards their 1st Category racing licenses (at the age of 16!)
