Guru Fanelli in Podium Position

Riding an Italian granfondo in a pro team support car is one thing you really must do before you die. Following Planet X Team Guru's Ivan Fanelli to an impressive podium finish in today's Bartoli granfondo was an unmissable experience. Hot, bothered and still shaking following a 3 1/2 hr bare knuckle high speed chase off we go...

The support team car's roles are obvious and yet misunderstood- recklessly fast, victory hungry machines who look after their top riders at all costs. Well, that's how it first appeared as Guru team manager Luciano Galleschi accelerated the BMW past another group of riders to break the pack and get another time update to his leading rider. Luciano is a classic support car driver- negotiating ridiculous mountain roads at maximum speed with minimal margin for error… mostly one handed and chain smoking… Not only supporting his own riders but co-operating with other teams too, disappearing down random short cuts to cut back to the front of the race, calmly and quietly commanding the whole team effort...

100km into Granfondo Bartoli and an on form Fanelli had survived the most punishing of climbs, hairpin descents and 60km/hr flat-outs to be closing in on the break away pack. Speeding from chasing group to leading pack the margin dropped from 40 secs to 32… then down to only 20secs. Excitement was immense, and the motoring speed and urgency seemed to mount with every bend we screamed around, often at the speed of the leading group. Fanelli was well placed in the chasing group of three, and was on form, so all was looking good for a top 5 finish.

Shame that 20km before the end we gunned the car one bit too much and kaput ! the power steering went and took half the engine with it. We had to limp back to the finish line, just in time to see Fanelli claw back 2 places to take the bronze position. An incredible result, amongst a field of world class racers this was no mean feat. And testament to his loved Guru Nanolight bike too. Next year, I promise I will ride.
