Ryan Smashes It

On Saturday 16th June, our Junior Team rider, Ryan Mullen, made his way up to the Lake District, to Kendal, to have a stab at getting the Junior National 10 mile TT record on the famous Levens course. The conditions, however, soon put a stop to any shout at getting a record. 20 mph winds and lashing rain put a downer on the vent with some significant names pulling out even before the event started, despite them having already warmed up. Wendy Houvenhagel was one of the notable non starters.

Ryan was off scratch in the event, setting off at 8 PM sharp, battling his way to the turn averaging about 28mph in to the relentless headwind. The tailwind home saw Ryan reach and maintain speeds of around 35mph. This brougt Ryan's average speed up to the 30.8 mph mark. He posted a time of 19 minutes and 47 seconds, and this was enough to take the event win by 57 seconds.

Sunday saw Ryan compete more locally in the Rhos On Sea CC annual 10 mile open. Two years ago, it was this very event that Ryan got his National Juvenile 10 mile TT record with a time of 19 minutes and 36 seconds.

Conditions, again, weren't ideal, with winds of around 7-10 mph - luckily though rain wasn't an issue. Ryan reached the turn, again battling in to a headwind having averaged 30.1 mph. The return leg saw Ryan up this average speed to bring it to 31.6 come the finish to record 19 minutes and 1 second by the course timekeeper, a national record, slicing 12 seconds off Alex Dowsett's 2006 record of 19:13.

Ryan was as always riding his Exocet 2 bike with Planet X kit.
