Going the distance

Otley's annual town centre criterium race took place on Wednesday 20th June and this year it was also twinned with the National Circuit Race Championships, which saw an Elite line up such as the Downing brothers, Scott Thwaites, and the GB academy along with the best Elite circuit race teams from around the country.

Jake SCOTT Planet X Junior rider still a cat 2 and on restricted gears decided to throw himself in the deep end and entered the Elite 1 -2  race although it was the National Champs. After been on the reserve list of 123 entries Jake was offered a ride on the night and he didn’t disappoint.

After starting at the back of the bunch for obvious reasons and the pace which could only be described as furious and electric from the beginning, saw Jake settle in and really begin to enjoy himself mixing it with the big boys getting up to his highest position of 7 th showing what he could do.

After what only could be described as a fantastic ride a check of the Garmin showed an average speed of 27.7 km and a last lap of 35 km which Jake said “ I just couldn’t pedal fast enough down hill on my gears to keep up ”

Jake was the only junior to complete the race, just finishing off the back of the bunch and rode what could only be described as a fantastic race and was a real credit to juniors riders (Professionals with Homework) and finished due to massive crowd support when some team riders packed, You had to be there to appreciate it !

So much for dad saying “ You'll be smashed off the back in 10 laps ”  What does he know !
