Around The World In 180 Days

Around The World In 180 Days

London 2012 gold medalist and world champion, David Smith MBE isn’t a stranger to a stern challenge. Now, the paralympian rower has set himself a new goal, an around the world cycle to raise awareness for his chosen charities.

Two years ago David was discovered to have a tumour wrapped around, and inside, his spinal cord by a Team GB doctor. After 12 years of pain - that he put down to the trials and tribulations of his pursuit of glory - the diagnoses came as a strange, but welcome, relief. Following intensive surgery, David managed to overcome all manner of odds to not just compete but win gold in the mixed coxed four rowing. Always on the look out for a new challenge, David’s latest endeavor might just be his toughest sporting obstacle yet. From May 2014 David will be cycling around the world, and we thought we could lend a hand in the only way we could, by giving him the best kit possible to send him on his way.

David visited our Sheffield HQ last week to get properly fitted and kitted out, with a Retul bike fit and new bike. Any challenge of the magnitude of cycling around the world requires the right equipment; this is more empirical when bikes are thrown into the equation. Chris Last, our bike fitting expert, made sure that David would be in the optimum position for his 20,000km in the saddle, cycling from the UK to North America, via Europe and Asia.

We know it’s not all about the bike, but it certainly helps. David chose an Planet X N2A kitted out with SRAM Red and our 50/50 carbon wheelset; a sound choice indeed. Especially considering that sections of the European leg see him snaking up Alpe d’Huez, cresting Mont Ventoux and venturing across the Stelvio. And, that’s before he gets to Asia!

We’re very proud to be supporting David in this great endurance challenge and hope that he achieves his goals. We’ll keep you updated on his progress throughout.
