Aileen Reid Sprints to Silver in London

Aileen Reid Sprints to Silver in London

Irish triathlete Aileen Reid powered home to a fine second place on Saturday in the Grand Final of the World Triathlon Series in London, powering her Planet X Mondo to the highest result ever achieved by an Irish athlete in this event and we're proud to be a close sponsor of Aileen's throughout her many achievements.

London was beset with the kind of weather conditions that make people want to not leave the house, unfortunately for those taking part in this weekends Grand Final, this wasn't an option. Instead, cold winds, a steady downpour of rain and slippery roads making things that bit trickier. Aileen started the 1500m Serpentine swim well, finding herself in 5th place at the halfway point,  dropping down to 10th by the end of the section. In contrast, many of the leading athletes going into London were struggling, Anna Haug, 2nd overall before the event found herself distanced in the water and struggled to regain contention.

The weather was causing havoc amongst the field during the 40km bike, with World Title hopeful Gwen Jorgensen coming down hard on a greasy Hyde Park Corner, effectively ending her race and leaving battle scarred in the process. Aileen on the other hand was going well on her Planet x Mondo, negotiating the tight corners well and finding herself in a group of 21 at the transition, lying in 16th position.

Deciding to push the pace to catch the breakaway leaders Non Stanford and Sarah Goff. Stanford's fine running form meant she quickly developed and added to her lead with every passing kilometre, eventually winning in a time of 2:01:32. Goff on the other hand was fading fast, with runners bridging to her fast, Aileen timed her final push to perfection and distanced herself from the bunch, finishing in a time of 2:01:57 to claim silver.

“I was running with Jodie and Moffy and I just through how am I staying here? I felt good and saw I got a wee bit of a gap on Jodie so I just pushed more and more to see if I could get a medal.”

“I’m totally delighted with 2nd place... it’s amazing.”

Aileen has been in fantastic form this series, being there or thereabouts throughout, finishing 8th, 9th, 12th on two occasions and 17th on two occasions in the World Triathlon Series.

“I’ve been consistent all year but that result was just the icing on the cake.” Aileen told reporters at the finish line.

The result also sees Aileen move up 3 places to finish 8th in the 2013 World Triathlon Series, her previous best being 17th in 2012.
