Retul Fit Eradicated My Glute Problem

For a while I have been struggling from a weakness in my left leg, which has been fatiguing far earlier than the right leg and causing me a number of issues in racing and training.

I’ve always adjusted my bikes to feel; I had never had a bike fit before and wondered if my problem could be due to bike position. So when Planet X offered a bike fit I jumped at the chance.

At the Rotherham show room the set up was very nice – plenty of coffee on the go and the fitter was really clued up on how the body worked (being a former nurse). We went through a ‘Retul’ fit, which is a system used to provide suggested angles for knees/hips based on statistics from a large sample of bike riders. The fitter attaches ‘nodes’ to all the main joints – ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and wrist and collects data from a series of efforts to establish movement in each of these joints.

It is a timely process, which requires taking data, adjusting something small – for example moving the saddle down half a centimetre, then re-taking the data to compare the change in the key ‘angles’.

What was nice about the bike fit was that the fitter was fairly flexible about our favoured position. For example, he allowed Nicola to keep her really aggressive drop despite it being outside of the recommended angles, due to it being the way she preferred to race. Also plenty of coffee, jokes and innuendos were very welcome.

I discovered that I was not pedalling smoothly with my left leg, jerking my heel down in the bottom of the pedal stroke, which was providing a funny looking diagram from the sensor.

This is something I have worked on whilst out training and I have found that pedalling now feels smoother; I can get more power down and it has removed my glute problem!

I’d like to thank James, who did our bike fit, for pointing it out to me.

I would definitely recommend this service to anyone who is suffering with persistent injuries.
