York City Cross- Mud up!

Planet X's Dave Haygarth took a very welcome win at the fourth running of the annual City Cross. The 2015 event was run in York on Saturday and involved a move to the more traditional cyclocross parcours of mud, after a night of heavy rain. Haygarth revelled in the technical course and led his qualifying 20 minute moto from the gun, to take his first ever win in Planet X colours - and a satisfying one after missing the bulk of two cyclocross seasons with ongoing shoulder surgery.

The Planet X veteran then went on to win the category finale once again taking the race from the front in the early stages of lap one. Building his advantage lap on lap, he enjoyed a safe ride home and crossed the line with a 25 second buffer over nearest rivals Jough Watson and Paul Nutton.

Bikes were cleaned in the duck pond, and riders slithered around in Rhinos and Supermuds, but ultimately, the day was warm and dry; a good thing, too. This is a spectator event, and spectacle is at its heart, so an afternoon of rain would not have been helpful.

Haygarth enjoyed his first City Cross. "It was as good as the day could have gone. Emma (Osenton - the organiser) and her team did a great job of organising and it was just pure fun. The 20 minute motos ran perfectly on time, and the format's great for spectators. To win both the qualifier and final is about all I could have asked for... that and the pan-flat but technical course. I love these corners-and-sprints things in the mud. It was made for me!"
