Fran Bungay Alpe Dhuez Short Course Race Report

As part of her training for the European 70.3 Championships this coming Sunday Fran Bungay competed in the Alpe Dhuez Short Course last Saturday. Read her race report below.

After travelling out to France, once the schools had broken up, to our house overlooking the start of the Alpe d'Huez Triathlon Festival, I had a great block of training in the mountains, which finished nicely with the Short Course race last Saturday. In previous years, I have always entered the long course, and this year, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the start of it from our garden, whilst sipping coffee and eating croissants!!  Race day for the short was mid afternoon on the Saturday, and despite the wall to wall sunshine we had experienced for the last two weeks, a break in the weather resulted in rain, mist and cloud ALL DAY!  However, it was warm, and the lake was significantly warmer than previous years, and as always, I was very pleased to be on my bike regardless of weather!

I had set myself a goal for the race to ride Alp d'Huez in under an hour, and despite slightly fatigued legs from some great training over the last few weeks, I gave it a shot! I progressively worked my way up the field whilst climbing the mountain, to finish the bike leg in 6th overall, overtaking quite a few pros on the way. Final time was 2:20, 8th overall, 3rd fastest female up the mountain in 58 minutes, so goal achieved.

A bit of R and R now until Weisbaden!

Good luck to Fran in the European Championships next weekend.
