UCI Podium for Planet X-Northside at Beaumont Trophy

Jack Rees describes a thrilling day for the Planet X-Northside team in the UCI-ranked Beaumont Trophy in Northumberland…

Renowned as one of the hardest races on the British road racing calendar the Beaumont Trophy is a 186km race which takes in four ascents of the tough 20% Ryals climb in Northumberland. It’s also one of only two UCI ranked single day events in the UK.

The Planet X-Northside team took to the start line with five riders, fresh off a number of excellent recent victories at the regional championships for the North East and Midlands and a victory for Dan Bigham at the Nick Clark Memorial. The team were very motivated and keen to deliver a strong performance in what is in essence one of our home races on roads they knew well.

Planet X-Northside team: Dan Bigham; Ben Hetherington; Richard Jones; Alex Luhrs; and Rob Orr.

Ben Hetherington, in typically aggressive fashion, instigated the main break of the day and with six others he build-up a lead of over 6’00 on the chasing peloton. At around the 80km mark the race really ignited with the main UCI teams and favourites for the race bringing the race back under control. At the 110km point the race was all back together in one big group.

Over the next 30km there were a number of attacks from the five bigger teams with the objective of splitting the race but this all came to nothing approaching the climb of the Ryals for the final time.

This was when Dan Bigham chanced his hand, attacking solo going into the final 20k of the race quickly building up a lead of 20 seconds which grew to 1’10 as Dan was joined by six other riders. Despite a concerted chase from the bunch behind this group had enough firepower to hold the peloton off and they went on to contest the finish in Stamfordham.

New Zealander Dion Smith broke away in the closing stages whilst Dan sprinted to a superb third place marking the best ever result for both himself and the team and registering our first UCI points and only just missing out on second. A delighted Dan joined Smith, of professional continental team One Pro, and Liam Holohan of Team Wiggins on the podium.

“Absolutely shocked right now,” was Dan’s reaction to his great ride, “Massive thanks to the team and sponsors #legends.”

We'd like to join the praise for Dan and the team for what was a great ride on the EC-130 E!
