FAQs

How do I choose the right mountain bike?

Since there are so many different mountain bike models to choose from, it can be tricky to know which one is right for you. With this in mind, there are a few factors you should take into account.

You should think about how you intend to use the bike. If you’re keen to rip up trails at your local woods, our On-One Hello Dave boasts impressive downhill action, while the On-One Bootzipper 29er is ideal for bikepacking thanks to its smooth steel frame and rigid fork. For a truly dependable ride with uncomplicated performance, the Titus Silk Road offers everything you need to explore, whereas the Titus El Viajero takes the lead as a highly responsive adventure bike that’s perfect if you want to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

If you’re after a mountain bike frame only, there’s lots to consider, including the frame material. For instance, the On-One Whippet is a super responsive carbon frame that’s suitable for all trails, offering steep geometry with the ability to cover ground quickly without holding you back. Perhaps a steel frame will be more suitable, such as the On-One Big Dog 29” frame. Offering an intuitive ride for any type of ride regardless of the terrain, this frame is able to handle rough rides while also performing well on smoother surfaces.

It’s also important to consider your budget. The good news is, Planet X offers one of the best selections of affordable mountain bikes in the UK, including our On-One and Titus ranges. Even though our prices are low, we never compromise on quality, meaning you can trust us when it comes to choosing your next bike.

What size mountain bike do I need?

You can work out what size mountain bike you need by referring to our handy size guide. This can be found on all of our product pages. The size guide uses rider height as a start point for sizing your bike, depending on your individual proportions and riding style you may choose to go up or down a size. If in doubt, get in touch with our team at Planet X (link to chat) to discuss your options.

Can I use a mountain bike on the road?

In short, yes - you can use an MTB to ride on the road, but it isn't designed for it, so if your intended use is to ride any distance on road you need to consider a road or gravel bike. MTBs are designed to perform off-road on trail and rocky terrains. The flat bar design is upright and looks comfortable, but it isn't aerodynamic and doesn't give you the best cycling position for efficient tarmac pedalling. The frame geometry and design is intended for off road use and you will find that using an MTB on the road is slow and heavy after a while. The typical wide and heavily-treaded tyres will create drag on the road and you'll struggle to hold your speed. Road use is best limited to what you need to get you to the trails!
