Boggle Hole - an Insiders guide to Who's Hard

Boggle Hole - an Insiders guide to Who's Hard

Spencer Smith lands in Manchester today in fighting spirit as we countdown to the inaugural Planet X Wayne Randle "world champions smackdown" Boggle Hole weekend . There will be a mixture of new faces, old faces and possibly some never to be seen again faces when over 40 riders meet on Saturday for the 2 day epic.In an exclusive whos who, we provide a top 10 ranking of the riders likely to be strutting their stuff and their current Planet X ranking in terms of hardness, ability, character and likelihood to make it all the way to Boggle and back .

1/ Hywel Davies He will be a surprise to many to be top rated hardman of the PX team, especially after Randle accused him of "whimpering like a baby" during last years team time trial. However, in terms of overall career achievements there can be no equal to the man who loves to get in his "hurtbox". A double IM UK winner, unbeaten ex pro cross trainer, top time triallist and full time teacher its truly his record braking ability to bend iron bars on his head that make him number 1. Rumoured to be well up for the big ring challenge, hes the man of other mens nightmares.Check him out in his pomp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXmwObT9SbM

2/ Wayne Randle The northern legend of the team who has been associated with Planet X for what seems like forever.Too many tales of ultimate hardness to list but theres a scattering of bodies and former cyclists all over South yorkshire that have been forced to rethink their cycling careers after suffering extreme bouts of Randleism. As Steve Farrell the former top uk road rider famously reported when asked who was the best ever roadie "Its got to be Randle his legs are carved out of granite and hes evil looking , when he accelerates its like being behind a porsche and you know your in for some pain. Hes as hard as nails and hes me and my mums hero". Just drops a few points over frontruuner Davies due to his extreme fondness for all things silk (Dugast).

3/ Spencer Smith The king of triathlon bling is flying all the way over from sunny florida.Has been known to duke it out in a half wheel hell contest side by side with Randle oblivious to the carnage caused to the rest of the group. A three time world triathlon champion who's as hard as nails , and will be determined to show the rest of the triathletes hes still got what it takes. A known friend of Randle dont be surprised if theres a combined move from these two to shake things up over the final miles .

4/ Thomas Hellreigel Mr Hell on wheels is one of the most renowned cyclists in triathlon history. This will be his debut in planet x colours and there will be a lot of eyes watching to see if hes still got the magic . Has spent around 7 weeks in a secret german training camp building up and should at least be the big favourite for the suntan challenge .Smith and Helreigel go back a long way and have battled it out for many years , no one knows whether they will hit it off as teammates so well get a few pointers this weekend .

5/ Bradley Johnson Hes the newest member of the team , and currently the most enthusiatic rider by far , his seasons plans this year include national 10 / 25 / 50 / 100 / 12 , team time trial , milk Ras , RAAM , national track league , Premier calendars and anything else you throw at him . Reccomended by many of the current team riders as one to watch with a whole host of introductory comments - "Reet strong duggie" , "reet talented" , "should a won 12 " and "Probably a bit too sun tanned for thee ". Just as hes the most enthusiastic rider by far , and a good shoeing might well do him good , hes also certain to be challenging Smith for the "king of bling" award and hellreigel for the " suntan challenge"

6/ Ray Eden Planet X stalwart and former 100 champion is a real dark horse to make it in the front group both days . His ability to suffer on the bike is only matched by his ability to suffer years in the planet x warehouse , originally introduced back in the late 90s with the infamous Randle introduction "hes reet strong that fat kid duggie that should sign im" he went on to an illustrious road career and inflicted an infamous 5 minute drubbing to Kev Dawson on his way to a national 100 victory .

7/ Ian Cammish Theres a big debate raging whether Cammish will be a no show . Ian is renowned for early season disappearing acts but seems to be infected with some renewed enthusiasm and is reportedly a definite to turn up . Hes the author of testing times and will be gathering articles from the top time triallists of the team , will probably be keeping a crafty eye on Bradley as his 2008 national 12 victory was achieved in the narrowest of margins over Mr Superkeen. The old silver fox is the most experienced rider on the ride , a true legend of the sport and one that even Randle looks up to , hes also a big mile eater and provided he can get over the big climbs will be towing the group along to the finish .

8 / Harry Wiltshire and Pete Freedman Team management is very interested in how the two young buck triathletes are going to shape up . On a similar ride two seasons ago we got a glimpse of the talent of Scott Neyedli when he duked it out mano a mano against the top road boys before stepping up to the bigtime with his IM UK victory. Of course your never sure with these olympic whippersnappers who cruise around in nancy pamby drafting races whether theyve got enough biking ability to step up to the longer non drafting distances where true cycling strength and ability becomes so important , its literally deal or no deal time for these boys . If Wiltshire or Freedman show some real strength , heart and ability then expect to see them pushed into the longer non drafting races later this year.Harry's been taking his preparation seriously. Read about his "fool proof" plan in HIS BLOG

9 / Sam Harrison Planet X's newest team member and Great Britian Olympic Development Squad Rider only 16, and already tipped to follow Nicole Cooke to Olympic glory. Showing his committment to the cause and getting his priorities completely wrong he has dropped all plans for racing and training with the elite national squad and olympic dreams to put himself on the line in this weekends major cycling happening - against the numbnuts and reprobates of planet x road, track, timetrial, triathlon and Ironman. He won two top U16 events at the 2008 British Youth and Junior National Track Championships and was overall winner of the Isle of Man International Youth Tour but that will all count for nothing at 10.30 its time to see if the boy has become a man .

10 / Rich Prince New in the role of Team manager the self proclaimed "ginger avenger" will be trying desperately to salvage any semblance of credibility with the riders he has been tasked to manage . Former national champion and medallist on the track and timetrial in his youth , he left the sport for the commercial world and ballooned to a humongous 16 stones of smarts suits , corporate babbledygook and blubber . He spent the past two years clawing back his fitness and claimed to be almost back to his best until he escaped the jaws of death a year ago when he was mowed down by a car at 50mph head on.No doubt Saturday night will feature a "battlescar' showdown between the three calamity specialists - Richard Prince , Spencer Smith and Wayne Randle have all been involved in life threatening carnage over the years and have scars to match . Prince expects to be in the mix all weekend but is most confident his mangled leg will get the points on Saturday night .

WTF? Setting the Welsh Wizard up for a fall are we? 1 weekend of training on the big ring doing reps up a 20% climb until blood came out of my eyes and unable to walk for 2 days is all the training i have done in a month of run training. But nothing like a bit of pressure. We are doing the climb twice right? Can i insure my cranks against bending?

  • Planet Playtex

Boggle Hole ? Not as hard as Fraggle Rock......

  • andy

Ha ha. Looks like one of those hills that if you stop halfway up (not that I'm saying you would of course) you have to start off again by riding down hill so you can clip in and then turn around really quickly. Have fun chaps eh!

  • adman
