Circuit Days Oulton Park 100 Mile Challenge

It’s not often that you get the chance to have a go on one of the country’s best motor racing tracks, let alone take your road bike for a spin around it. A few weekends ago Planet X sponsored an event that let you do just that! Circuit Days is an organisation that normally organises closed circuit days for car drivers to test their racing ability, recently they saw the potential to offer cyclist the same opportunity. The Circuit Days 100 Mile Challenge offer cyclists timed laps of the Oulton Park race track, with teams competing in a time trial style event to record the fastest lap times and overall 100 mile time. We couldn’t just help to promote the event as a sponsor, we had to have a go too so we put together a team of our strongest lads and set off with the intention of recording some quick times.

The prospect of riding on a closed circuit accompanied by a road surface much smoother than anything I am used to on my rides across Sheffield was fantastic. The event itself was very well organised and the participants all seemed to enjoy themselves despite there being a seemingly large range of abilities and fitness levels throughout. There was a sense of mutual support from all of the teams as every rider was treated to a cheer and regular encouragement when they completed each lap. This is an eve t for anyone, whether you’re a seasoned road man or a casual commuter, it's fun and relaxed. I will definitely be signing up for it next year.

60 teams/240 riders turned up to ride the 100 mile Challenge and although the abilities of each rider on the course was different fun was had by all. Some were so eager to ride 100 miles on the day that after the track closed they continued to do laps of the car park to get the rest of their miles! Team Simon Fearnley recorded the fastest over 100 miles on the day clocking a time of 03:59:14. Our boys put in the hard work to place 6th overall with a time of 04:41:33.

I enjoyed the event, it was an early start but a really nice day for it and plenty of people turned up. It was chilly when I went off for the first stint but it didn’t take long for me to get warmed up as the circuit is quite lumpy. Throughout the day the team improved changeover efficiency. When we finished we all went round and did a team lap at the end.
